  • 8 oz dark chocolate (70% cacao), chopped
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Salted Caramel

  • 1/2 cup store-bought caramel sauce (or homemade)
  • 1 teaspoon flaky sea salt (such as Maldon)

  1. Preheat โ€” Set oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Line a 9x9 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving overhang on two sides for easy removal. Lightly grease.

  2. Melt chocolate and butter โ€” Combine butter and chopped dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl over simmering water (or microwave in 30-second bursts). Stir until completely smooth. Let cool for 5 minutes.

  3. Mix wet ingredients โ€” Whisk sugar into the chocolate mixture. Add eggs one at a time, whisking well after each. Stir in vanilla.

  4. Add dry ingredients โ€” Sift flour, cocoa powder, and salt over the chocolate mixture. Fold gently with a spatula until just combined โ€” don't overmix.

  5. Assemble โ€” Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Drizzle caramel sauce over the surface, then use a knife or toothpick to swirl it into the batter in a decorative pattern.

  6. Bake โ€” Bake for 25โ€“28 minutes. The brownies are done when the top is set and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with moist crumbs (not wet batter).

  7. Finish โ€” Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle with flaky sea salt. Let cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares.
